Generally speaking, the stiffer and lighter they are, the better. Since they originated from racing, dedicated road cycling shoes are made to be light and stiff enough to provide maximum pedaling efficiency. The fit is meant to be snug with a firm heel to stabilize the foot inside the shoe, and they have a smooth outsole—usually made of tough nylon, carbon fiber, or a combination of those materials. While not designed for extensive walking, there are small heel and toe pads for some grip and protection. Dedicated road cycling shoes are only designed for clipless pedals, using either 2- or 3-bolt cleats on the bottom that clip directly into the pedals. Since they have very little flex and the cleats protrude from the soles, they shouldn’t be used for off-road riding or for any riding where extended periods of walking might be needed (bicycle touring, mountain biking, bike packing, etc.).

Comfortable, Fast, and Stylish – much like myself
Fore the past couple of years, I’ve been riding my road bike and rocking some Giro shoes, but always a hybrid shoe meant for mountain biking and walking. I really liked the look of these, and since I knew my size in a Giro shoe, I was reasonably sure they were going to fit well.I wasn’t wrong. At all. I was so right, it started to feel like it was wrong to be so right.But I wear a 9.5 and the 44 fits perfectly, so if you are planning to get a Giro shoe, that sort of conversion should work out pretty well.In the end, this shoe is just amazing. Super comfortable, easy to get on and off, and it took about 3 minutes to get my cleats installed and set up on the bike. I recommend these shoes for sure.
